expert dermatologist with 8 years experience at the Dead
Sea, and the Chief Dermatologist at the Dead Sea Medical
Center: The Dead Sea area, situated 400m below sea level is the lowest place in the world and consequently has certain characteristic atmospheric and climatic features presents at no other places in the world. Firstly, the sunburn spectrum of ultraviolet light is very weak at the Dead Sea because of continuous haze that develops over the water. Secondly, the water of the Dead Sea itself has the highest concentrations of salts found in any natural body of water. These salts are present in a total of 33% concentration. Magnesium chloride is the salt of the highest concentration 50% with sodium chloride at 25%, calciurn chloride 12% and potassium chloride 4%. The bromides are found in significant concentration in the Dead Sea Area. This haze occurs from an extraordinary high water evaporation estimated at two billion cubic meters per year. Because of this, the majority of UVB sunburning rays are filtered out. This allows a greater exposure to the longer wavelength UVB and penetrating natural UVA rays. These two major factors, sun and sea are the basis for the management of many different diseases at the Dead Sea particularly dermatological disorders. PSORIASIS has been the main skin disease treated although ATOPIC DERMATISIS, VITILIGO, ACNE AND ICHTHYOSIS have responded to this treatment. The principal climatic factor at the Dead Sea accounting for the benefit seen in treatment of these diseases most likely is the naturally filtered spectrum of UVA and the longer wavelength of UVB - a form of natural selective ultra violet phototherapy (NSUP). The results in patients treated with psoriasis in the Dead Sea after 4 weeks showed that 85% had complete cleaning or excellent improvement. Topical medications, natural Dead Sea lubricants and ointments without steroids. Psychotherapeutic influences certainly play a role in the patients treated in the Dead Sea. Many realize for the first time that they are not alone in their suffering and that it is possible to treat this disease naturally. After the treatment in the Dead Sea, patients with Psoriasis have 3-6 months period of remission before noticing the beginning of relapse and state that the psoriasis frequently does not reappear as severely. |
