25 To 30 August 2008 - Secrets and Ties - Wondrous Connections in the Israel Museum Collections

With its campus renewal project fully underway, the Museum begins a program of changing installations in its Youth Wing to showcase masterpieces from its collections in Fine Art, Archeology, and Judaica and Jewish Ethnography, to ensure that major works from the Museum’s vast holdings of 500,000 objects are always available for its visitors. The first such exhibition presents major works from the collections, representing different cultures and periods in dialogue with one another, connected by a common theme – representations of the human being. A ”Zionist” carpet, a Dutch family, an Egyptian foot – all are presented here together, revealing that despite their disparate origins, they are tied visually and thematically to each other. Curated by David Ibgui, Chief Curator of the Ruth Youth Wing, Secrets and Ties proposes to create new connections among works of art and evoke personal interpretations of works already familiar to the public.

11 to 25 August 2008 ”Venice of Wind and Fire”

Venetian glass in the creations of contemporary Israeli artists - A new exhibit at Museum of Italian Jewish Art .

In the year 1291 all the glass blowers in Venice were asked to leave Venice for the Island of Murano close-by, because of the great danger of fire from their furnaces in the wooden buildings of the city.
Very quickly the Island of Murano became the European center of artistic glass works. The artists received many privileges and gained a very high status, but they also paid a very dear price: it was forbidden to them to leave the territories of the Venetian Republic, so as to preserve the secret -the unique techniques of glass-blowing.
The death penalty was instituted for artists leaving the Republic.
The secret has been preserved until today, even if there isn’t any longer such a harsh penalty for revealing them.
Still today, Venetian glass artistic creations preserve their unique look and beauty. Very few people outside of Murano have the privilege of learning the traditional techniques of the great local artists, among them a certain number of contemporary Israeli artists.
Sculptures and jewelry representing the fruit of their creativity will be shown in this exciting and splendid exhibit at the Museum of Italian Jewish Art in cooperation with the Yaniv Gallery of Glass Art.
